Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Comprehensive VC-Backed Benchmarking Survey?

The Comprehensive VC-Backed Benchmarking Survey is a compensation dataset covering tech company roles at 550+ VC-backed companies, sponsored by leading venture capital firms. The dataset includes executive, individual contributor, AI, and board roles. Companies that participate get free access to the full dataset — salary, variable pay, total cash, and equity data — updated year-round.

How do I get access to the data?

Participate in the survey. Access is free for any company that contributes its own compensation data — give data, get data. The survey takes about 15 minutes, and participants receive free access to the full anonymized benchmarking dataset.

How much does the survey cost?

It's free. There's no subscription fee or paid tier — participation is the only requirement for full access to the dataset.

What executive roles does the survey cover?

Along with ICs and managers, the survey also includes executive and board roles: the full C-suite (CEO, CFO, CTO, CRO, COO, CMO, CPO, CCO, CPO/People) and VP-level equivalents across 8 functions — Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Product, Customer Success, Finance, HR, and Operations — plus founder vs. non-founder CEO breakdowns.

What compensation data is included?

Each role includes the full spectrum of pay: base salary, variable pay target, total cash compensation, and equity percentage, shown as percentile distributions and as individual anonymized data points — not just averages.

How can I filter the data?

You can filter by the factors that actually drive pay at VC-backed companies: capital raised, valuation, funding stage, revenue, headcount, location, and more. This is the key difference from general-market surveys, which typically cut only by revenue or headcount.

Is my company's data kept confidential?

Yes. All submissions are fully anonymized and aggregated with data from other participating companies. No identifying information — at either the company or individual employee level — is visible or traceable at any point. Other participants see individual compensation data points, but never who they belong to, and submissions are validated by compensation experts before entering the dataset.

How is my data stored, and can I delete it?

All data is stored in secure infrastructure that is fully SOC 2 and GDPR compliant. Data is retained to enable aggregate analysis and year-over-year market comparisons, but Comprehensive will delete your data upon request at any time.

How often is the data updated?

Year-round. Unlike traditional annual surveys, the dataset refreshes continuously as new companies participate and existing participants update their data.

Who participates in the survey?

More than 550 VC-backed companies from early to late stage, alongside sponsorship from some of the world's leading venture capital firms. The dataset includes over 4,000 executive data points.

How long does participation take?

About 15 minutes. The survey is designed to be completed in a single sitting, and participation is what unlocks free access to the full dataset.

How is this different from other compensation surveys?

Traditional surveys benchmark against the broad market and cut data by revenue or industry. This survey is built specifically for VC-backed companies: you can benchmark against companies at your capital raised level, funding stage, or valuation — the factors the data shows actually predict pay at venture-backed startups.

Can my VC firm sponsor or join the survey?

Yes — Comprehensive partners with venture firms to bring the survey to their portfolios. Contact us to learn how your firm can join.

Where can I see insights from this data?

Comprehensive publishes the State of VC-Backed Executive Compensation report, a free analysis of the dataset covering the biggest predictors of executive pay, founder vs. non-founder CEO compensation, the AI pay premium, and location effects.
